Thank you, SueMac! You were the first person I shared the very first draft with, way back in the summer of ‘87. You took it seriously and gave me some much-needed encouragement. You wrote all over it. “More poetry!” “Love this part!” “It’s dragging here.” The most important one you put in the margin for me, the real poetry: “cobalt blue and chrome burning ...” You scribbled over whatever I had had there and wrote those words, and I’ve edited and revised this piece a hundred times in over 35 years, but cobalt blue and chrome burning reminds me of the importance of the poetry in everything I write. Thank you, Sue.
Oh my goodness Steve! You are that guy that every driver hates! Are you insane? I agree with Roger, “Great story about what someone might but probably shouldn’t do.”
If this isn’t fiction, I think you are lucky to be alive. If it is fiction based on a much less adventurous ride, I am relieved.
I was expecting to see a picture of your mangled Masi, not the convertible. I guess the cobalt blue was a prettier picture.
This could be a nice short story to submit to a bicycling magazine. 🤓🚴🏻♂️🚙
It started as a journal entry about the kind of riding I was doing back then, living in Chicago. “Traffic jamming” was my adrenaline sport for a few years. I don’t ride that way any more—there are so many nice trails and bike lanes now!
I would like a headline of “FICTION” on your stories that are fiction. I am more or less a literalist, so this would be helpful to me, whereas other readers may figure it out much faster. 🫣
This was a fun read. As a mountaineer, I can relate to personal challenges that are not well understood
by others. This personal race is, of course, over the top. Great story anout what somepne might but probably shouldn't do.
Stands the test of time!

A good start.

Seems as though you may have had a death wish back then! 😉
I was reckless. But this piece is fiction, so the devil-may-care attitude here is more the narrator’s character than my own.
