Pablo and Patricia and their friend Sussy brought me to the Montevideo tango at the beach event as a friend. Besides me, there were no tourists, no Americans, everyone knew the language.
The best dancers dressed well, heels and loafers. They danced close with their eyes shut, their steps perfectly synchronized.
The dance is gentle. A combination of synchronized walking, slow dancing, sorrow, connection, hugging.
Now I’ve had a tango lesson with a patient woman, and no shared spoken language. Tango is its own language.
I like that you are having such a rich experience in Uruguay. I like the metahoric words about tango dancing, but don't quiet agree that tango dancing is a slow and gentle dance. I think tango dancing by experts combines slow movementa with emotional and swift flourishes that are anything but slow. But what do I know, as a Scandinavian who's never been there?
